I think the question of what consciousness actually does as an agent, as a director or controller of the mind - that hasn't been well formulated. Consciousness is simply a repository or collection of impulses and stimuli that have been experienced by the person. The usual definition of consciousness is that it's awareness of what is already in the mind. MC: The theory that most psychologists would ascribe to does not take account of the autonomy of consciousness and people's ability to come up with plans, purpose and motivation that are not inherent. JE: You say in your essay that psychology does not yet have an adequate idea of consciousness. I interviewed Csikszentmihalyi over the phone about his latest essay, 'The Politics of Consciousness', published in a new collection of essays called Well-Being and Beyond. They lose self-consciousness and a sense of time, and 'zone in' to their activity, sometimes achieving things that are 'almost impossible'. Inspired by the creative process of artists and musicians, Csikszentmihalyi spent decades researching the 'flow' states of consciousness that people can achieve when they're totally absorbed in doing what they're best at. Professor Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is one of the world's best-known psychologists, famous for developing the concept of 'flow'. The first is that old, triumphal model, in which scientists are towering heroes of the modern age, unlocking nature’s secrets via brilliant minds and indomitable drive. But his narrative is deeply conflicted, in that it seems to be informed by two very different mental models about how science is done. Undoubtedly, Isaacson tells the tale with flare and he has exhaustively researched the story, talking to dozens of scientists in the U.S. In his new offering, The Code Breaker, Isaacson tells the story of the discovery and development of CRISPR gene-editing technology from the vantage of Jennifer Doudna, the UC Berkeley biochemist who shared the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with French researcher Emmanuelle Charpentier for their work on the structure and function of this molecular system. A sometimes breathless, technocratic enthusiasm an ability to reduce characters to a few key gestures (bright smile, wary eyes) an overblown big man (or, in this case, big woman) approach to history. Not surprisingly, Walter Isaacson, bestselling author and former Time editor, has the style down pat. In the rush, the reader is propelled, questions cast aside, riding the tale you want them to believe. No wobbling narrative charging right along. developed its formula for telling stories-catchy lede, billboard that tells 'em what you’re going to tell ‘em, last graf that catapults them into the future.
